Hockey Initiation Program - Lead/Head Instructor

IP -  Lead/Head Instructor:

Time expectation: 4 hrs. per week (typically every Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm)

Required courses: On line courses 1) Respect in Sport – Activity Leader, 2) Gender Identity, 3) Coach Level

Non-course requirement: Police Check

·       Familiar with Hockey Canada’s IP delivery program and objectives.  Understand the weekly lesson plans and the intent of the skill progressions and technical aspects of the lessons and the associated drills.

·       Possess strong communication skills.

·       Possess a commitment to the goals and philosophy of the IP.

·       Works with the Director of the IP program to both implement and improve the delivery of the on-ice program.  Provides ideas to improve the program.

  • Maintains a leadership role with the instructional volunteers and players through leading by example and conducting her/himself in a professional manor.
  • Deep understanding of the teaching the skills of hockey and how that relates to young hockey players.
  • Technically sound in hockey skills and has the ability to demonstrate/teach, correct, encourage and provide effective feedback to both players and instructors.
  • Ability to coach instructors (typically parents) on proper preparation and delivery of practice plans.
  • Starts each on ice practice/session with an instructors’ meeting to review lesson plans and objectives.
  • Will encourage and ensure that all instructors have opportunities to provide instruction to players on the ice as it is important for all instructors to maintain a leadership rapport with players.  This will be achieved by Coordinating the delegation of responsibilities to the team of instructors
  • Will be willing to be a mentor to new instructors along with second year leads to provide mentoring to the first-year IP lead instructors.
  • Will be responsible for the safety of all players and instructors on and off the ice and will notify the Director of IP if support is needed to maintain the safety of her/his players.)

·       Co-ordinate the orderly entrance and exit to/from the ice surface by the participants.

·       Will maintain open communication with player’s, instructors’ and parents at all times.

  • Report to the association through the director of the program.
