DRILLS FOR OCT 5, 7:45pm PAD D-  DRILLS 1, 7, 8, 12

Hello Players!  This page has links to all the video demonstrations of drills.  When you get your message of what we are going to do for the day, please review the links below as we are going to get right into it!

IMPORTANT: Review the video and then review the Key Teaching Points as this is what you should concentrate on during the drill.

Feel free to watch all of the drills as they show core skills that will help in a game.  However, concentrate on the ones advertised for practices.

NOTE: Goalies shall watch prescribed videos as well.  All Players shall watch the assigned goalie ones as well.

DRILLS FOR CHECKING SKILLS (not body checking)

1. Checking Skills- Corner Angling
Key Teaching Points:
- Control Skate, take proper pathway
- Stick on Puck, force puck carrier into poor position so puck can be taken away

2. Checking Skills - Open Ice Contain
Key Teaching Points:
- Quick Feet, deception, agility
- Both players need to read and react

3. Checking Skills - Circling Angling (Shadow Drill)

With and without puck
Key Teaching Points:
- Defending player keeps a tight gap on the offensive player
- Defensive player keep shoulders square and tries to limit crossovers
- Defensive player tries to stay within one stick length
- Use proper form on transitions both backward to forward and forward to backward
- On the 1-1, defensive player takes inside ice and keeps the attack outside
- Stick on puck, body on body

4. Checking Skills - Gap Control (1 up 1 down)
How it works (video is not available):
On the whistle - Defensemen must touch goal line and forward must touch blue line. Defenseman tries to clear puck and forward tries to score

Key Teaching Points:
- Forward wants to create space by using speed and attack the net
- Defensemen want to read the forward and create a tight gap. As defender approaches he must read the forwards control of puck, speed etc. and now must either pressure and “jump” him or contain. Defenseman does not want to back in on goalie and create a screen. “Stick on puck and body on body”

5. Checking Skills - Continuous Angling
Key Teaching Points:
- Players angle the offensive player to the wall but taking away the back of the net with body position and stick. As players move up wall get “stick on puck” and rub them out (no body checks!). Stick on ice and play the puck first. Recover puck and attack the net.- - - Shooting - crisp shot no later than the hash marks
  • (note on during the drill, the players alternate to each side - first they are defending, then next attacking)

6. Forecheck Progression
Key Teaching Points:
- Players angle the offensive player to the wall but taking away the back of the net with body position and stick. As players move up wall get “stick on puck” and rub them out. Stick on ice and play the puck first. Recover the puck.
- Defensemen are encouraged to use good breakout tactics such as angle, shoulder checks etc
This would be used in a game after a dump in and their defenseman gets to it.  Helps forecheckers work the angle to take the puck away.

7. Defence to Forward Breakout then Defence Defends
Key Teaching Points:
Forward dumps pucks and defenseman retrieves and breaks out the forward. Forward up ice and turns back for a 1-1.
Defenseman must close gap and play the 1-1.
D-man to challenge in the neutral zone and “jump” the forward.
- Forwards want to hustle up ice and create some space to attack. Use good individual tactics to challenge the defenseman
- Defensemen need to gap up and decide
- close the gap and “jump” the forward before they get turned or defend the middle of the ice and pivot and contain. This may depend on each situation.  Learn to read the play.

8. Goalie to Defence, Breakout and 1 on 1
Key Teaching Points:
- Defenseman can either yell “set” or “pass”. In this drill, goalies set the puck
- The key is communication between defensemen and goaltender
- They need to decide what is going to be done with the puck before the defenseman arrives
- “Set” or “Pass” should be options every time the goaltender touches the puck
- If it is “set” goaltender will set the puck for the defensemen to pick up. If “pass” then defensemen will get open and goaltender will pass the puck to them or a forward
- Use good 1 on 1 tactics

9.  Goalies - Alternate Net Drill
- Goaltender starts in one net gets 2 shots, then has to turn and butterfly slide to get in the other net and then face 2 shots again.
- Do the sequence twice then rest
Key Teaching PointsL
- Goaltender has to be set, quick turn, then slide to other net
- Shooters let goalie get in position before shooting

10. Goalies - Stick Save - re-direct in butterfly
Key Teaching Points:
- Strong commitment to visual connection to the puck all the way through the rebound
- Ensure the stick is positioned in the vision of the G so they can see the puck, stick and gloves in the same frame
- Angle the stick to control the rebound

11. Goalies - Stick Save then Second Shot
Key Teaching Points:
- Strong commitment to visual connection to the puck all the way through the rebound
- Angle the stick to control the rebound
- Beat the pass to the shooter
- Recover with hard T-push and stop to get set for the second shot

12. Neutral Zone Re-Group - 2 on 1
Key Teaching Points:
- stick on the ice, be ready for the pass.
- Make good passes.
- Defensemen "jump up" and close gap on the forwards when they re-group and come in on the 2 on 1

13.  Small Area Game - 3X 1 on 1
