Thunder drop game 1 to Gryphons!
The Sunny Acre Farms Midgets opened the OMHA prelims last night with a frustrating 6-3 loss to Guelph at WERC. Tyler Skilling opened the scoring for the Thunder with a breakaway goal midway through the first from Matthew McDonough. Guelph tied it at 1-1 near the end of the first with a PP goal. Early in the second Guelph took the lead converting on a 2 on 1 with a shot blocker side off the post and in on Thunder netminder Spencer McPherson.
After killing a 5 on 3 and the first 5 of 6 minutes of a Guelph man advantage Guelph went up 3-1, with a PP goal. Anthony Barone cut the lead to 3-2 near the end of the second with a bar down goal to give the Thunder hope at the intermission.
The third saw Guelph score on it's first shot and take a 4-2 lead, Gavin Thomson made it close again with a top corner breakaway goal from Stefan Moneypenny, but penalties and a second 5 on 3 helped Guelph ice the game. Final score 6-3. Hard to win in the playoffs with 26 min in penalties.
Rematch tomorrow night at Alcott 9:00pm.
