Hockey Skills Program




As an alternative to the Hockey Initiation Program, for a more gradual introduction into hockey, you can choose to register in the Hockey Skills Program

The Hockey Skills Program consists of 10 bi-weekly skating sessions with focus on skating fundamentals for beginners using the same fundamentals as the Initiation to Hockey Program. You can start in this partial program and move into the full program part way through the season (additional fees may apply).

Provided to
any HHMH participant (at an additional or stand alone fee, selected during Registration) and has been running successfully for the past 17 years.

Who is it for?

Players typically are ages 4 to 12 who are either:

  • Want a more gradual introduction to hockey or,
  • Who have never played and want to start and too old for the Hockey Initiation Program.
  • Excellent resource for extra skill development for existing House League players. 

What is it?

  • A comprehensive and flexible program for the development of hockey players and to give the participant the best possible start to an enjoyable playing experience.
  • Consists of 10 Sessions bi-weekly over twenty weeks.
  • The main focus is on development and individual skills.
  • Aims to create participants who will continue in the game.

The Program

  • Based on the Hockey Canada Initiation Program
  • Uses the dedicated Hockey Canada Initiation Program Manuals as a basis.
    • Resources include four program manuals, and an instructors manual.
  • All on ice Lead Instructors must attend an IP instructors certification Clinic, and be IP certified to instruct.
  • A>B>C>D level sessions of approximately 50 minutes each.

  • Level A -  4, 5, and 6 years old
  • Level B - 7 and 8 years old
  • Level C - 9 and 10 years old
  • Level D - 11 years old and up

Equipment Required

All players must wear full equipment as per the OMHA minimum equipment standard.  Mouthguards are mandatory.  Parents, you can find out more information on equipment required by going to our Parents Corner.
