Tyke Initiation Program 2013-14
Welcome to the New Tyke Initiation Program 2013-14 The new program will follow the OMHA recommendations for ages below Novice. The program will deliver more skating skills development and more stick/puck skills development for ages 4, 5 & 6.

This season, the 4 year old age group will be able to play hockey as well, provided they have the basics of skating, ie: moves by strides, or can move by walk/shuffle. Falling alot is not a problem, they will soon learn to fall less.
Basically, if your child has completed or almost completed a "Learn to Skate" Program, or can stand and move a little, than registering in the full program is recommended.
The 4 year old that is learning to skate is welcome in this program too by registering for the skating development sessions only on Sundays and in January may be able to join the hockey sessions, depending on evaluation.
For parents of the 4 year old that are not yet sure, the pre-season on-ice evaluations will help to determine the program.
The on-line registration will have an option for the skating only program and for full skating /hockey program.

There will be 3 "skill level" divisions and all children will be in a division that is appropriate to their level.
Each hockey division could have a mix of 4, 5 & 6 year old children as the skill level determines.
Skill level will be determined by on-ice evaluations to be held 1-2 weeks before the season starts.
The on-ice evaluations will be conducted after the Select 6 tryouts and team pick.
Note that the Select 6 team and players will not be in this league.
There will be opportunities for player assesment and movement during the year depending on skill level.

The primary program will consist of 40 one hour sessions as follows:
  • 20 skating skills sessions (one hour each session)
  • 20 stick/puck & hockey sessions (one hour each session)
  • 2 tournaments with 3 full-ice games
  • 2 full-ice game days in January & February
Program Registration Fee
The early bird registration fee for this program is $500 (for 40 hours).
The early bird discount applies before April 15.

Instead of the full program, you can choose to register in the partial program for $165, which conssists of 10 skating sessions and does not include any hockey.

Hockey Development: Full-Ice and Cross-Ice Format
The most noticeable change will be that more time is spent in development with small area games.
The program will still have full ice games, but not as many as before.

The small area format gives the opportunity to teach/develop the "game between team players around the net".
At this age group, the full-ice format tends to be dominated by the faster skaters, having many breakaways particularly at the beginning of the season.
In comparison to full-ice format, the small area game format gives more opportunity for all players to handle the puck and learn to play team hockey around the net to score or prevent scoring.
The full-ice format succeeds in making all players skate faster but tends not to develop the game around the net, which involves all players on the team.

The small area games are fun and packed just as much energy as the full ice games.
Hundreds of Minor and Professional Hockey Associations around the world are using this format for this age group as it results in long term player development.

There will still be full-ice game events scheduled in the Christmas and Spring Tournaments.

Coaching
There will be considerable pre-season training for all coaches and volunteers and on-going guidance with presentation of sessions and use of the OMHA Manuals.
